Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) is a classroom-based, early intervention for students in their first year of school (Kindergarten) and one component of the Best Start Initiative. L3 is targeting text reading and writing within small groups of three to four students for at least three times a week. Students are involved in working independently for short periods of time when their peers participate in Guided Reading and Guided Writing lessons. The activities provide them with opportunities to work alone, interact with a peer and participate in a small group of students. Teaching decisions are based on ongoing, sensitive observation rather than a prescribed and sequenced series of teaching and learning steps including a data collection every 5 weeks. Later in the year as students demonstrate foundational skills and knowledge they move to different and more complex learning.
